What is Challah?
Challah is a ceremonial braided bread that is eaten on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, and on special holidays. On these festive days, a blessing is said over wine and 2 “Challot”. The Challah symbolizes “Manna”, the name of the edible substance that G-d provided during our ancestors' exodus from Egypt, that allowed them to stay satiated on their journey.
What is a Challah Cover?
A Challah Cover is a covering that is used on Shabbat and holiday tables to cover the two Challahs that are eaten on these days. The Challah typically sits on a Challah board. Spiritually, the Challah Cover is known to represent the dew that would collect on the Manna each morning.
Who can I gift a Challah Cover to?
It is a tradition to use a Challah Cover in every Jewish home on Friday night. No matter your level of observance or engagement, the tradition of covering the bread adds color and meaning to your table. If you gather on Friday night, or if you plan to in the future, this linen Challah Cover is a worthy heirloom to add to your collection.

During our ancestors’ journey through the desert, a portion of “Manna” was provided by G-d on a daily basis. However, on Shabbat, the day of rest, two portions of Manna descended, hence the two Challot we eat on Shabbat today.
Who designs AHYIN Challah Covers?
The first phase of creation of our linen Challah Covers is design. Micaela Ezra, the founder of AHYIN, pours her heart into the creation of each style. With a background in textiles and womenswear design, she fuses a contemporary aesthetic with ancient motifs and premium fabrications. Micaela first hand-drew our signature El Jardin Challah Cover in her West Village apartment in NYC when she was pregnant with her first daughter, in 2013. Each Modern Judaica piece you see here is inspired by deep symbolism and tradition, yet is completely original to AHYIN.
How are AHYIN Challah Covers made & what are they made from?
Each AHYIN piece is completely hand-embroidered onto the finest 100% linen cloth, often imported from Belgium and sent across the world to the artisans who create them. The pieces are then laundered, lined and hand finished with our signature eyelash fringing technique. The embroidery is a combination of cotton, silk rayon and metallic yarn.
Who hand-embroiders AHYIN Challah Covers?
We are privileged to create our hand-embroidered Challah Covers in collaboration with artisan communities across the globe. Initially AHYIN Judaica textiles were made exclusively by a community of women in the remote agricultural town of Ichmul, on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Embroidery is a family tradition that these women learn from childhood, and the work they do for AHYIN contributes to sustaining their families and community.
