A Tallit is a garment used during Jewish prayer that is commanded by G-d in the Torah. “Speak to the children of Israel ..they shall make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments… and they shall affix a thread of sky blue [wool] on the fringe of each corner” (Bamidbar/Numbers 38).

The Tallit contains these fringes, known as “Tzitzit'', on the four corners of the garment. Typically white, the Tallit is normally a rectangular mantle, similar to a blanket, that Jewish men have worn since ancient times.

Jewish Tefillin are a set of small black leather boxes with leather straps that contain scrolls of parchment inscribed with l verses from the Torah. Wrapping Tefillin both on the head and the arm is a mitzvah for men from Bar Mitzvah age (upwards of 13 years). This commandment is outlined in the Shema prayer - “You shall bind them as a sign upon your hand and they shall be as a reminder between your eyes.”

  • What is the symbolism, or spiritual meaning behind Tefillin?

Wearing Tefillin begins at a boy’s Bar Mitzvah, and is a ritual that connects him to his many ancestors who did the same since the time the Torah was given. The manner in which the leather straps are wrapped around the body, establishes a physical connection between the head, the heart and the hand - drawing attention to alignment of mind, heart and action.
