  • What is Matzah?

Matzah is unleavened bread that is eaten on the Jewish holiday of Passover. It is eaten to commemorate the unleavened bread our ancestors’ ate as they quickly fled Egypt, after generations of slavery.

  • What is a Matzah Cover?

Matzah Covers are used to cover the 3 Matzahs on our Passover Seder table, as we retell the story of our Exodus from slavery. Historically we find Matzah Covers which reflect the aesthetic of the part of the world from which they come. They hold immense significance as a table centerpiece for this defining Jewish Festival. They also have 3 pockets to observe the instructions at the Seder.

  • Why do I need a Matzah Cover?

It is customary to use a different cover for the Matzah, than we do for the Challah during the course of the year. Most Challah Covers allude to “Shabbat” and Passover is an entirely different holiday. A different decorative cloth tells a different story.

Most importantly however, the weekly Challah Cover is in touch with “Chametz” (the prohibited bread which rises). We change our cover, much like we change over the other utensils and tableware in our home, which have been in contact with bread.

  • What is the symbolism or the spiritual essence of Matzah?

Matzah is said to be the bread of humility. During the year we eat leavened bread “Chametz” which rises, symbolizing our ego. On Passover we eat flat Matzah, remembering we were once slaves in Egypt, and it was only by Divine intervention that we were redeemed.

  • How many Matzah’s will fit in the AHYIN Cover?

Our square covers measure 14” x 14” and have three pockets. The round covers measure 16” diameter. All standard boxed Matzahs and round Shmura Matzahs fit within this shape.

The cover has separate spaces for top, middle and lower Matzah. During the Seder we break the middle Matzah, and half is placed in a separate afikoman bag.

  • What else do I need at my Passover Seder table?

The order of the Seder includes blessing a number of special foods in addition to the Matzah. We have a Seder plate, with slightly varying items depending on your family tradition - these include a boiled egg, Marror - bitter herbs, parsley, lettuce, horseradish, haroset and a shank bone.

  • How are AHYIN Matzah Covers made?

Each AHYIN Passover Matzah Cover is completely unique and original. They are designed by Micaela Ezra, AHYIN brand founder. The Matzah Covers are then brought to life by a completely hand-embroidered process using the finest 100% linen cloth and 100% cotton for the embroidery.

  • Who hand-embroiders AHYIN Matzah Covers?

We are privileged to create our hand-embroidered Matzah Covers with artisan communities around the world. SInce 2014 we have worked with a talented community of women in Ichmul, Mexico. Embroidery is a family tradition that these women learn from childhood. They are able to support their families and community with the income they earn from this work. In order to meet increasing demand, we also work with a collective of craftspeople in Delhi India. To learn more, visit our Story page.

  • Is this an afikoman bag?

The afikoman is the broken piece of middle Matzah, which is hidden during the Seder for the children to find. Often it is placed in a special bag first. This Passover Matzah Cover is not an afikoman bag
